As a star of American Ballet Theatre, Angel Corella performed with such joyous, explosive virtuosity that he regularly brought audiences to their feet. Whether he was firing off pirouettes or flying at warp speed in a manège of coupés jetés, his presence emanated beyond the balconies. From 2008 to 2014, he directed Barcelona Ballet in his native Spain. Today he's back in the U.S. as artistic director of Pennsylvania Ballet, where he's reignited the repertory. While Balanchine will always have a place in any season, Corella has added works by Wayne McGregor, Christopher Wheeldon and Andrea Miller, and invested in reworked full-lengths.
